How to Start Computer in Safe Mode?


Safe mode is a way that allows you to diagnose problems of your operating system. The safe mode only loads the software it needs and ignores the third-party programs or drivers installed in your computer.

There are three ways how to start your computer (Windows 10) in safe mode.


From Settings:

  • Go to Windows and open Settings.
  • Select Update & Security then open Recovery menu.
  • Select Restart now from the Advanced startup section.
  • Then your computer will restart in the Choose an option screen.
  • Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Here you will be asked to enter your BitLocker recovery key.
  • After restarting your computer you can see a number of options. To start your computer in Safe Mode select 4 or press F4. If you want to use safe mode with networking then select 5 or press F5.

From the sign-in screen:

  • Restart your computer.
  • On the sign-in screen select the Power option then Restart while press and hold the Shift key.
  • When your computer will restart again you can see the Choose an option screen. From there select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Here you will be asked to enter your BitLocker recovery key.
  • After restarting your computer you can see a number of options. To start your computer in Safe Mode select 4 or press F4. If you want to use safe mode with networking then select 5 or press F5.

From a black screen:

  • Press and hold down the power button to turn off your computer.
  • Again press the power button to turn on your computer.
  • When the windows just has started such as show the manufacturer’s logo in some device, hold down the power button again and turn off your computer.
  • Press the power button to turn on your computer.
  • When again starts the Windows hold down the power button to turn off your computer.
  • Allow this time to fully start. Then you will enter the Windows Recovery Environment. You need to enter this Windows Recovery Environment before you enter the safe mode.
  • Now follow the next steps to open your computer in the safe mode.
  • From the Choose an option screen select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  • After restarting your computer you can see a number of options. To start your computer in Safe Mode select 4 or press F4. If you want to use safe mode with networking then select 5 or press F5.

To exit from the safe mode just restart your computer.
