What is Computer Software?


A computer cannot run without a software. Software is a collection of instructions that allows a user to interact with the computer. It tells the computer what to do and how to do a specific task. There are two main categories of software depending on their use and application. They are:

  • System Software - The System Software is also known as the operating system. This operating system actually run the computer. This software control all other operations of the computer. Every computer need the operating system. Some popular operating systems are:
    • Microsoft Windows
    • macOS
    • Linux
    • UNIX
    • iOS
    • Android
    • Ubuntu etc.

  • Application Software - Application software is used to perform specific task on the computer. There are different types of application software we use daily in our computer to do various types of work. Some common examples of application software:
    • Word processing application - MS Word, Google Docs, Abiword, Apple iWork- Pages etc.
    • Graphics Software - Adobe Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, Blender, GMP, Carrara etc.
    • E-mail Application - Microsoft Outlook
    • Web Browsers - Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Safari, UC Browser etc.
    • Database Software - MySQL, Clipper, dBase, MS Access etc.
    • Multimedia Software - VLC Media Player, Window Media Player, Picasa etc.
